While working out is a great step to the new you, there is also another important process to add into your schedule. What you eat largely affects your body. While there are ongoing debates about what is good for you and what isn’t, there are a few general tricks to help your body and your bank. Eating healthy doesn’t necessarily dieting or cutting out groups of food. It just means making better choices. Eating healthy on a budget can be challenging on your own, which is why we created a list of 10 ways to eat healthy on a budget.

1.Plan out your meals
Planning out your meals will make your life so much easier. No more getting home late and grabbing fast food because you do not know what to cook. No more kids constantly asking you what’s for dinner. Stick to healthy meals you know how to cook or take a look at some new, fun recipes. Once you have your weekly meals planned out, make a grocery list of everything you need to make these meals. This will also make grocery shopping a lot easier.

2. Stick to your grocery list
When you go grocery shopping stick to your list! Also do not go shopping when you’re hungry. You do not want to be unnecessary food or unhealthy food because your hunger has taken over. Sticking to your list will also save you from having to go down every aisle, saving time.

3. Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables
Buy fruits and vegetables when they are in season. If you need to, freeze them! These items are typically cheaper when they are in season, and sometimes even have special sales. Freezing fruits and vegetables are nice when it comes to making soups, smoothies, and sauces.

4. Buy generic brands
Do not buy for a brand. Buy for price and quality. Sometimes the generic brands are just as good, but cheaper! If you are more money conscious than quality conscious, go for generic brands. Sometimes big named brands can hold a less amount of food, and be higher priced, just because they can. Take some time and compare your choices.

5. Use coupons
Stores often have reward programs, coupon books in store, and some will send you books in the mail. Take advantage of these offers! Using coupons may seem tedious, but it will make your shopping a lot cheaper.

6. Try local farmers markets
Local farmers markets are a great way to get fresh, cheap, food. Most of the time you can even get everything organic. It will also help out family owned places and give back to your community. It can even be fun to spend the day there with your kids and family.

7. Make your own food
Try not to eat out on a regular basis. Make your lunches, use leftovers, cook dinner and snacks at home. It will cause a lot less harm on your wallet and is better for you. Find some good, easy, fun recipes and make cooking a habit. Include your family in the process and teach the little ones how to get started in the kitchen.

8. Cook in large batches
Invest in a slow cooker! This will make your life a lot easier and will make enough food to feed everyone for a couple of days. You can make almost anything in a slow cooker, soup, roast, chicken, lasagne, and a lot more. It might even help you to get a slow cooker cookbook! Although it might be fun to wing it a few times.

9. Repurpose leftovers
Leftovers are a cheap way to feed everyone for a few days. If you are tired of eating the same thing, switch up your leftovers. Leftover chicken? Turn it into tacos! Leftover soup? Add some rice to give it some body. Leftover vegetable platter? Throw it all on the stove and make a stir fry. There are so many things you can do with leftover food, you just have to think outside the box.

10. Grow your own food
If you are lucky enough to live in an area where you have a backyard, put in a garden! Seeds are cheap and the food will be a lot better than store bought. It may take some time, patience, and learning, but once you figure it all out, it will be worth it. It is also a good time to teach the kids about gardening.
